The Case for AI as a Service in South African Insurance

By Zane Masson

In South Africa’s insurance sector, operational efficiency has always been a defining
factor in competitiveness. Yet despite years of digital transformation, one area remains
frustratingly slow to evolve: claims management.
Claims account for up to 80% of an insurer’s operating costs, and much of that process
still relies on manual effort. The result is a costly bottleneck due to: long turnaround times,
high administrative workloads, and a persistent risk of error or fraud. For many insurers,
these inefficiencies aren’t the result of a lack of innovation appetite, but rather
uncertainty about where and how artificial intelligence can fit into existing systems and
workflows.
That’s where the idea of AI as a Service comes into play.

From Ambition to Application
AI as a Service isn’t about running experimental models or chasing buzzwords. It’s about
applying modular, proven AI tools to real operational challenges, starting small but
aiming for measurable results.
For insurers, that means integrating AI directly into the claims process without having to
rebuild their entire technology stack. Imagine a workflow where incoming claims are
captured automatically, whether they arrive via email, web form, or WhatsApp. Policy
details are verified instantly, potential fraud is flagged early, and claims are intelligently
routed for approval or review.
This approach doesn’t replace people, it empowers them. Claims assessors spend less
time on repetitive admin and more time on the decisions that really matter. Customers
get faster payouts. Fraud teams get cleaner data and better visibility. Executives see the
direct link between operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Why Insurance Is Ready for AI
Few industries have as much to gain from focused AI adoption as insurance. The data
exists, the processes are structured, and the return on investment is clear. Yet many
South African insurers are still caught in pilot mode, running limited projects that never
scale beyond testing.
The next step is to move from experimentation to execution. AI as a Service provides the
bridge, allowing insurers to start with targeted, high-impact use cases such as claims
triage or fraud detection, and expand gradually into underwriting, document
verification, and risk scoring.
Of course, in a regulated environment, trust and compliance matter as much as speed.
Any AI implementation in this sector must be POPIA compliant, auditable, and
explainable, ensuring that automation enhances oversight rather than compromising it.

Outcome Over Optics
For insurers, the opportunity is straightforward: less admin, faster claims processing, and
happier customers. By viewing AI not as a futuristic add-on but as an operational
enabler, insurance leaders can begin shifting from curiosity to capability.
AI is no longer a distant concept, it’s a practical, strategic tool for those ready to use it
responsibly and effectively
